9 K-Pop Relay Dances That Are Funnier Than They Should Be

Relay dances are a fairly simple concept: members of the group line up and dance a few beats when it’s their turn, before moving back to the back. At least, that’s what happens in theory. Somehow, they have become one of the funniest and most prominent features of K-pop. From hilarious off-script choreography to utter chaos in line, there’s always something wild that you don’t see right away. Don’t worry! Here we bring you some of the best relay dances, collected for you to enjoy!

1. SHINee – “Don’t Call Me”

SHINee’s long-awaited comeback in 2021 was legendary in many ways, but this relay dance might just be one of the funniest things to happen around that time. It starts out fairly normal, but halfway through it becomes clear that there is no way to hide the outgoing personality of the group. You just have to wait for the piano section during the bridge: you will laugh as much as Taemin!

2. GWSN – “BAZOOKA!”

It seems that GWSN has forgotten what “relay” means, in the funniest way possible! It would be hard to find a moment in this relay dance where they were actually in line, but there’s nothing to complain about: fans can enjoy seeing the members having a good time together, and they didn’t miss a single ad-lib on the entire floor. . Plus, the impromptu choreography at the back of the line is so much fun.

3. THE BOYZ – “DDD”

The title of the track is “Dance Dance Dance,” and THE BOYZ definitely nailed it – regardless of what the choreography was supposed to be or who was at the front of the line! From Eric’s unexpected jump on Jacob near the beginning of the relay dance to Younghoon becoming Sangyeon’s impromptu keyboard and then being dragged off-camera, there’s plenty to laugh about!

4. Jessi – “ZOOM”

If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen this song. However, there is no one who does it quite like Jessi and her amazing backing dancers! They’re enthusiastic, fun, and sassy all in one relay dance, and the sound of the camera shutter leaves plenty of room for some pretty hilarious poses in the back. Plus, the five women do a great job of cheering each other on, no matter how crazy the choreography is!

5. ATEEZ – “Deja Vu”

“Deja Vu” is situated on the sexier side of K-pop, but apparently no one told ATEEZ! There’s a lot of chaos in the back that definitely makes this relay dance more goofy than serious, and the reference to the maknae Jongho to Oh My Girl’s wildly popular song “Dolphin” is hilarious compared to the soft vibes of ATEEZ’s title track. Plus, there’s so much fun behind-the-scenes footage that it could constitute a relay dance all on its own!

6. MAMAMOO – “AYA”

The members of MAMAMOO are industry veterans, which means they are professionals in all things K-pop. However, that doesn’t mean they have to take everything seriously all the time. They definitely know how to let loose and have fun, and this relay dance proves it. They make funny faces in the back, run around and mess with the choreography in a relay dance style. Keep an eye out for Hwasa’s hilarious prank on Solar after the bridge.

7. TXT – “LO$ER=LO♡ER”

There’s no better time to crack a couple of pranks than when someone is at the front of the relay dance because they can’t see what you’re doing, and the members of TXT have taken notice! There are so many funny moments in this dance that it’s hard to point them all out, but keep an eye out for Huening Kai’s mic stand-inspired spin in the back and Yeonjun demonstrating perhaps the twerking most aggressive the K-pop industry has ever seen.

8. (G)I-DLE – “TOMBOY”

(G)I-DLE shows off their racy side with their latest comeback “TOMBOY,” and the members’ bold personalities shine through. One of the best parts of the relay dance is seeing the members switch roles, and the maknae Shuhua took advantage of this to make a funny parody of leader Jeon Soyeon’s rap section. He’s full of good humor, and interestingly, Jeon Soyeon seems quite proud!

9. Stray Kids – “God’s Menu”

There isn’t a single Stray Kids relay dance that doesn’t turn into chaos at some point, but “God’s Menu” might be one of the funniest. The contrast between the EDM track, difficult choreography, and typical Stray Kids antics makes this relay dance especially memorable, and you can practically hear the members’ laughter over the music.
