An obsessive love, threats and excessive violence: The tragic death of Alicia Delgado, the ‘Princess of Folklore’

She was known as the ‘Princess of Folklore’ and she had everything to succeed: talent, passion for art and a genuine charisma that made her known not only in Peru, but in much of South America. Her name was Alice Slim, a prominent Peruvian folk singer, who was cruelly stabbed to death on the night of June 24, 2009, 13 years ago, inside her apartment in Surco. In her tragic end, a guilty party was pointed out: Abencia Meza and an obsessive love, accused of hiring a criminal to end the days of the “great love of her life”.

They met in 1999. There was a lot of chemistry from the beginning. They forged a close friendship that was noticeable when they went up to a concert stage to perform Cancer of love, Life is one, I fell in loveamong other songs. The fervent public filled the venues to see the two vernacular vocalists.

abence He had declared himself openly homosexual. He did not care for criticism of conservatism or that it was rumored that he had an affair with Alicia. In front of the cameras, they appeared as very close friends and even became partners in a show promoter.

However, nobody knew the scenes of jealousy, violence and death threats that they hid behind their displays of affection. Until Alicia spoke.

In 2009, Alice Slim denounced Abencia Meza at a police station in La Molina for physical assault. The artist said that she had beaten her for complaining about having arrived at her apartment in an obvious state of intoxication. At that moment, the singer, desperate and feeling very vulnerable, recorded her partner and blamed her that if something happened to her, it was her fault.

“When you see this video you will draw your own conclusions. If something ever happens to Alicia Delgado, here she will leave the evidence. I have been constantly threatened by this lady, Abencia Meza, who has a twisted and sick mind,” she said in a clip recorded on June 18, five days before her death.

On the morning of June 25, 2009, foul odors from the department of Alice Slim, located in Surco, they caught the attention of the police who entered the house and found the singer dead, face down, almost decomposing. She was wearing a white jacket, pink pajamas and slippers with apparent signs of having been strangled.

The forensic report confirmed that the interpreter had signs of torture and rape; she had nine stab wounds and obvious signs of having been strangled with a strap. Due to the skin tissue found under his fingernails, it is believed that he fought for his life to the last breath.

This is where everything takes a turn.

She was interrogated at the Independencia police station. There was a precedent: the video and the blows that she gave her friend, but she denied it. Even today, she is confined in prison, she continues to deny being involved in the murder.

During that period, in Tumbes, he was arrested Peter Mamanchura, Abencia’s bodyguard. He blamed his former boss and his entourage for murdering Alicia, and confessed that he had carried out the crime.

In July 2009, Elizabeth Figueroa Cortez, head of the 50th Lima Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, filed a criminal complaint with the Judicial Power against Mamanchura for murder and Abencia Meza as intellectual author. The ‘Pistolita’ was in prison for six months, she was released by court order, but in October 2011 she was once again incarcerated in the Chorrillos Women’s prison where she has been confined until now.

Alice Slim She was 50 years old when she was mercilessly murdered in her home. According to the record of the removal of her body, the stab wounds that determined her death were in the front part of both sides of her neck. The cuts were three centimeters long each.

The body of the folk singer is resting in the cemetery Gardens of the Buen Retiro in Stone bridge. In 2009, hundreds of fans gathered in the cemetery to say goodbye to the folk singer. Abencia Meza did not attend the funeral.

He left an only son: Junior Crooked Thin. Her firstborn is the result of her dissolved marriage with Zenobio Delgado Santa Hilario. The young man never accepted the “little gun” as his mother’s partner, so he opposed the relationship and moved away from her for a while.

After the lifeless body of Alice Slimthe police captured Pedro Cesar Mamanchurra, his bodyguard and driver, in Tumbes. The aforementioned admitted having murdered the vernacular singer and blamed Abencia Meza of being the intellectual author of the crime.

In February 2012, the Fourth Criminal Chamber for Inmates in Prison sentenced Abencia Meza and Pedro Mamanchura to 30 years in prison and the payment of 250 thousand soles to Alicia’s heirs. At that time, both indicated that they would file an appeal for annulment of the sentence.

During these ten years behind bars, the national artist has sought to prove her innocence through evidence, sending letters to the media, trials and more. However, the testimony of Cesar Mamanchura and the video of Alice Slim holding her responsible in case something happened to her did not help her.

In 2020, the Judiciary ratified the sentence of 30 years in prison against the vernacular singer. In other words, she must serve her sentence in the remainder of the years in the Chorrillos Women’s prison, where she is currently.
