Meet the Brazilian who won a lottery to go to space: ‘It’s not just for billionaires’ | Minas Gerais

The statement is from production engineer Victor Hespanha, 28, who spent his childhood watching movies about astronauts, space, rockets and looking at the sky of Belo Horizonte, where he lives, wanting to walk there one day.

Now this day is about to come. He was drawn for the Blue Origin flight, a space tourism company, by the Crypto Space Agency (CSA), after buying for the first time an NFT, using cryptocurrencies, and will be one of the six passengers on the trip (see who the other passengers are below).

Hespanha is a resident of the Santo Antônio neighborhood, in the Center-South region of the capital of Minas Gerais, and will be able to participate in the NS-21 mission. with the feat, he will be the second Brazilian to travel to space – until then, only professional astronaut Marcos Pontes, who went to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2006, had already done the same.

“I know a few details, but it’s an 11-minute trip, 5 of them in zero gravity. We’re going to leave the atmosphere line and float for 5 minutes in a capsule at very high speed. From the videos I’ve seen, the “window” is big, you can see a lot”, says the engineer.

he invested around R$ 4 thousand in NFT. And he jokes that he got an opportunity that he previously thought would only be “for billionaires”:

“It’s scary too, I never thought [que conseguiria], I’m an ordinary person, but I’m having this amazing opportunity. This is to show that space travel is not just for billionaires.”

The date of the trip has not yet been released by Blue Origin.

‘My mother cried thinking I was going to die’

Victor told g1 Minas that his family and friends are unbelievers. Her mother cried when she heard the news.

“When my parents found out they were in disbelief, so were my friends. My mother cried thinking I was going to die, then she thought I was going to the moon, but I explained to her that it was nothing like that and we laughed. Everyone was happy for the opportunity I’m going to have “, said the engineer.

CSA, which paid for the ticket, is a company that claims to have a mission to unite the technology of the space industry with the cryptocurrency market.

On April 25, 2022, it made 5,555 NFTs available to the public and said that one of the owners would have the chance to travel into space. On April 30, the company held a lottery and selected the Brazilian, who bought the item to diversify his investments.

“I bought it thinking about the upside potential,” said Hespanha.

In addition to being from Belo Horizonte, one of the passengers is the Mexican Katya Echazarreta, who has a YouTube channel and presents television series that seek to provide inspiration for women and other minorities interested in science. She will be the first Mexican woman to go into space..

Engineer and investor Evan Dick will make the trip for the second time. He was on the NS-19 mission, which also took Laura Shepard, daughter of astronaut Alan Shepard, who is named after the rocket, into space.

Blue Origin’s next voyage will also include Hamish Harding, president of executive jet company Action Aviation; Jaison Robinson, founder of the real estate firm JJM Investments; and Victor Vescovo, co-founder of investment firm Insight Equity.
