The last time the royal family appeared on the balcony was in 2019, including Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and Prince Andrew

From royal wedding kisses to end-of-war celebrations, the balcony of Buckingham Palace in London has been the scene of patriotic moments since Queen Victoria first appeared in 1851.

For the platinum jubilee, the balcony will once again provide the picture frame for a major occasion, when Queen Elizabeth II and 17 other members of the royal family are due to appear on Thursday, after the military parade to mark the occasion.

“There has been a lot of talk about who will be on the balcony and who will not,” says Pauline McClaran of the Center for the Study of Modern Property at Royal Holloway in London.

Only “duty royals” and their children will appear, which means that the Queen’s son Prince Andrew and grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, will be excluded.
