Fate decided that Omar Sharif met the world director David Lean in 1957, and a strong friendship developed between them; Which prompted David Lean to nominate him for the title of “Lawrence of Arabia”, which was produced in 1962, and his star rose after this film; He was nominated for an Academy Award, and became a familiar face in Hollywood and the world, and his international works continued, such as “Doctor Zhivago”, but then disputes arose between him and his wife, Faten Hamama; What led to the occurrence of divorce, but he continued to love her until his departure.
Nostalgia for Egypt
“Hollywood” or world fame did not preoccupy Omar Sharif about his love for Egypt, and he used to take part in a movie starring from time to time to ensure his presence in the cinema screens in Egypt. Omar Sharif’s artistic career has been garnered many awards; He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1962, but did not receive it, and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for Doctor Zhivago in 1966.
In 2003, he received the Golden Lion Award from the Venice Film Festival for his total work, and in 2004 he won the Caesar Award for his role in the movie Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Qur’an, and in the same year he won the Celebrity Artists of the Year Award because of his great cinematic offering.
Omar Sharif did not like to go to the doctors, and in 2010 he was forced to do so when he lost the ability to walk, and he underwent surgery to install a joint in the left foot. Doctors advised him to perform the same operation on the right foot, but he refused.
In 2014, Alzheimer’s disease attacked him fiercely and forgot everyone around him except for his friend, the famous Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass, who kept him until his death on July 10 after a heart attack at the age of 83.
