Mihaela Evi, the idol of the girls she trains: “I had fun and I was happy at the same time”

I am proud because I did not skip any step in my training as a coach, I started with minihandball and I became the national champion at junior I with a team raised by me. Today I coach in Bistrița a young team in Division A, but without performance objectives as a team. I set out to help them grow in value to make the step into the National League, and as a consequence of the fact that we worked well, we managed to win some very important matches with teams like U Cluj, who wanted to return to the first echelon of value.

I think the next normal step in my career is winning a medal with the national team. A World Youth Championship is coming up in the summer, from June 22nd to July 3rd, in Slovenia, where I have the chance to fulfill my dream.

At Gloria we currently have 14 teams of middle school girls. I live funny and beautiful moments every day. I enjoy their positive energy and the passion with which they practice the sport they fell in love with. For example, last week I had fun and at the same time enjoyed the project of a little girl who had to choose a job for when she grows up and a model in the field, and she chose me. ‘What will you do when you grow up? ‘, and the answer was,’ When you’re a handball coach, you smile and you’re always happy. ‘“, said Mihaela Evi, for digisport.ro.

The blow received by Mihaela Evi: “I suffered a lot because it was my dream”

Born in Bucharest, Mihaela Evi wanted to make a name for herself in handball in Târgu Mureș, but injuries and the inappropriate environment forced her to leave behind what she loved most. Shortly, set up a club in her “adopted” city and became a successful coach with national and international titles.

The idea of setting up a private handball club came naturally and easily, and they were both physical education and sports teachers. Târgu Mures was a city with a tradition in handball, but which did not exist in the final tournaments and in the important competitions for a very long time.

I’ve always liked children, so a job of playing handball and playing with children seemed ideal. The establishment of the Olympic club was a real success, we had hundreds of children enrolled from the first month of activity. Because I was very young, I was 21 when I started training, I chose to start from scratch, with groups of 7-8 year old girls. In 10 years of activity, we have won all the possible national competitions: junior V, junior IV, junior III, junior II and, icing on the cake, junior I.

I also won several medals at international tournaments with that generation. Being a private club, the activity could not be sustained when the girls moved to seniors. The local authorities set up a SCM in 2018, I think, but that turned out to be a total fiasco. A club with 13 sections in the first year of its establishment, which after a few months accumulated huge debts. The year I was national champion in junior I, I competed in the competition with money from home.

We had been unpaid for months, but we kept bringing in money so we could finish the competition. Although the conditions were very difficult, I was close to a promotion in the League of Flowers with a team with an average age of 19 years. The pandemic came and with it the offers for our players at that time, who finally decided to put the financial part first.

We suffered a lot then because it was my dream to promote in the first league in the same formula in which we had fulfilled, one by one, all our dreams together. But I think that was actually a blessing. We had personally incurred a lot of debt to support the business, and we probably would have continued to do impossible things if we hadn’t been disappointed.
